The Illinois State Reformatory for Women at Dwight was constructed in 1927. It remained under Dept. of Public Welfare jurisdiction (1927-1953) until its transfer to the Dept. of Public Safety. With the creation of the Dept. of Corrections (P.A. 76-433), the Dwight facility joined other state penal institutions as part of the new department (1970-) .
